Extremely BIG and incredibly CUTE!

My latest Rocket Dog projects took me to place I’ve never been before – working with large canvases. For the longest time 11×14 was the biggest canvas i would tackle. After a while I worked up the nerve to try a few 16×20 pieces.

Last week i received five, 36 x 36 inch canvases from Cheap Joes Art Stuff and I went crazy!

I’ve finished the first piece titled “Star Gazers”. I came up with the idea one day while wondering how dogs would translate what they see in the night sky. I think I got it right but I can’t figure out how to test my theory with actual dogs. Any ideas?

The Radio Flyer Retro Rocket

One of my favorite vintage toys is the red Radio Flyer Retro Rocket. Radio Flyer Retro Rocket

I’ve used this toy in a previous “Rocket Dog” painting and when I started thinking about painting a Westie flying a plane, the Flyer seemed a perfect choice.

Why take the Car when you can Fly!

FACT – Most dogs love hanging their heads out of car windows.

Roll down the window?

Imagine yourself as your dog – nothing compares to that feeling of the wind in your fur and the bugs on your tongue…

If a car ride is great, imagine how wonderful it would be to fly above the clouds in your very own airplane.

Even better – fly your own plane and race with your doggie friends!

My imagination got away from me with this new painting – these dogs sure do look like they’re having fun. “Race Day” Acrylic on canvas, 12 x 12 inches.

Von Braun’s Assistant – The Original Rocket Dog!

My “Tails of Imagination” Series has taken on a life of its own and sometimes I surprise myself with the images that pop into my imagination. My most recent painting ties together a lot of concepts I love – dogs, science, nostalgia, and just plain silliness.

I was reading something online about future space travel and that got me thinking about the pioneers who came up with the rockets we have today. Dr. Wernher von Braun was the father of modern rocketry and that got me wondering if he had a dog. And if he did have a dog maybe he was as smart or smarter than the Doctor!

From that came “Von Braun’s Assistant” – here’s a start to almost finish for the project:
